 Thursday, September 24, 2009TubesAfter what seems like 100 ear infections and 3 different antibiotics in 2 years, we’ve just scheduled a date for my son to get tubes in his ears. He’s had a host of tests done for other medical issues, but never a surgery. Can anyone offer any insight?

We are a group of colleagues, friends and working mothers who wanted to find a way to share our experiences as parents with others and to seek the advice of those who have encountered and successfully overcome some of the ordinary and not-so-ordinary challenges of working motherhood. Among ourselves we have 10 children: boys and girls, babies through school-agers, children who are adopted and not-adopted, have special needs and those who don’t, and each of whom is precious in their own right.
As professionals, our experiences range from child care to politics, writing to retail. In the interest of full disclosure, we all work for Bright Horizons, and some of us are beneficiaries of the company’s child care services. But this blog is meant to provide a community of support and discussion for all working mothers (fathers welcome too!), and you need no affiliation with Bright Horizons to be a part of the conversation.

My friends whose kids have gotten tubes have only had positive things to say about their child's improved general health, speech, and hearing after the tubes were put in. Incidentally, I also had them when I was a tot. And, if you ask me, I'm no worse for the wear either. Good Luck!
My oldest child had 3 sets of tubes. That was after 15 ear infections in one year. I am happy we finally made the decision to have them put in. She eventually grew out of them and didn't need them anymore (around 5). Her eustation tube just needed to grow some more so that the fluid could drain on its own. It is hard to see them go into surgery but it is really not a big one and is really quite quick and painless for them. Good luck!
I'm glad to read that it's a common thing because my daughter who is one just got her first set of tubes. She had 3 ear infections in less than 2 months so hopefully this will help. I had them when I was younger too and can voucher it worked for me. Good luck!
