Suggestions Needed
I’m looking for suggestions for two items—diaper cream and sippy cups made out of something other than plastic.
We currently use California Baby diaper cream at home, and that’s what I was sending to the child care center. However, they must use the cream much more often than I do, because my infant alone was going through almost a tube a week (at $11.50 each!). So we switched to Boudreaux’s Butt Paste because it comes in a giant tub that lasted my first child almost 2 years! Both are a 3 on the Cosmetic Safety Database so I’d actually like a safer alternative. Any suggestions?
My next quest is to find a sippy cup for my 7 month old. We use glass bottles and are hesitant to switch over to plastic (even if they are BPA Free) sippy cups. My center allows the children to walk around with their cups so they need to be indestructible, and they need multiple cups for the day (a liquid can only be left in the cup for an hour, so if they start and stop drinking, it has to be tossed). The only alternative I can think of is stainless, but with the price, purchasing multiples can really add up.

For diaper cream... I use the tried and true A&D ointment. I have used Boudreaux's, but I don't think it works as well as A&D.
That said, I just looked up A&D on that site, and it's listed even higher than Bourdreaux's. How can Vitamin ointment be so bad?
Sippy cup for a 7 month old? Isn't that a little too young??? My son who is now 7 never used a sippy cup as we were advised by our pediatrician that the sippy cup can cause the child delayed speech. My suggestion, and of course is only a suggestion, is to wait until you are able to teach the child how to use a straw which is what we did. Good luck.
Vaseline and Aquaphor are my favorites (both 0 and 1) You can even buy generic and it will last you forever...
Aquaphor. Not an inexpensive alternative, but it works really well. We use it for everything, including chapped hands from all of the handwashing, and dry cheeks, too! Looks like the healing ointment is a 2.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'll let you know what I end up using. As for my now 8 month old and a sippy cup, we're not ready to try one, I'm just a notorious planner.
After checking out the database you reference, I'd be extremely skeptical. It struck me as a prime example of unfounded alarmist information that paralyzes people who are just trying to make good safe choices. That said, Boudreaux's also now makes an aloe version of Butt Paste. That formulation wasn't listed on the site you reference, but it may meet your needs. I have personally used both versions of Butt Paste regularly as well as Aquaphor and Desitin on occassion. I think they all work equally well for preventing rash. None of them will heal diaper rash. On our doctor's advice we've used bacitracin with a coating of diaper cream over it to heal painful rashes. You are NOT supposed to use neosporin, which many people think is interchangeable with bacitracin, for diaper rash though.
We use a diaper salve from Northern Essence (northernessence.com) that I love. I have been using for about 9 months and still have lots left and it's very affordable. It's not listed on the site you linked to, but the ingredients are supposed to be all natural and great for sensitive little bums. They have lots of great products on their website.
Hi, first time on the blog, at daycare the kids might spend a bit more time with dirty diapers then they would at home so that is why they use the creams much more. I love Balmex for a rash cream and I instructed people to use it as soon as the behind gets red and my child who is now 3 has NEVER EVER had a diaper rash even tough she has been at a Bright horizons daycare since she was 9 months old. In 3 years we have purchased 2 tubes (but that is because I got a new tube when my kid turned 1 just in case the other one was getting old). We also traveled a lot on long haul flights 4+ hours and never had problems with a diaper rash. Sippy-cups: I am from Europe and I was raised without snacking so we eat and drink at the table and I never had my kid carry a sippy/bottle around. At the playground I have a steel water bottle with a straw lid and offer it often to keep the munchkin hydrated. Hope this helps.
I have the same passion that you do with living a greener & healthier life. I love doing research & learning about how we can make our home healthier & put healthier "stuff" into our bodies!
I don't have any suggestions for sippy cups but do have a few for diaper cream:
1. Aquaphor cream
2. Balmex Clear ointment
3. Shakleebaby diaper rash cream
I just found this blog (I actually read the entire Bright Horizons newsletter!!) and love it! Thanks for your posts!
Hi - I use Triple Paste for bad rashes, it is wonderful but not cheap. A&D I use all the other times just to protect the skin..
They both at sold in large jars.
