My Teeth
Photography by Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel
My Teeth is a delightful board book for infants and toddlers filled with photographs of children's faces from around the world and designed to introduce early counting. A major developmental task of early childhood is learning to name, understand and master body parts. What body parts could be more fascinating to very young chldren than teeth?
From the face of a South African baby with no teeth to that of a young child from Belize with 10 teeth, the clear and beautiful photographs help the very young expand their views of the many different faces of children. The artful views of children's smiles also promote and reinforce children's number skills. Older toddlers will enjoy counting the teeth in each picture with an adult. Ending with two photos of how we use teeth to eat corn on the cob and how we brush to take care of our teeth, the authors illustrate the important roles of these crucial parts of children's bodies.
Dr. Richard and Michele Steckel are the photographers for this lovely book, which was created as part of the Milestones Project. This project has produced more than 35,000 photographs of children to illustrate that we are more alike than different and that we all share many, many characteristics. The project has created books, puzzles, teaching tools, and exhibits in public places. Many of childhood's universal milestones, such as first haircut, first pair of shoes, or the start of school are illustrated through photographs. The program's ultimate goal is to encourage children and adults to reflect on our common humanity and ultimately reduce prejudice, intolerance, and hatred.
