Science Experiments
Children's science projects should generally follow the four steps of the scientific method. These are:
- Observe
- Form a hypothesis (a question or problem)
- Predict based on the hypothesis
- Experiment to test the prediction
Tips to Begin Brainstorming Your Project:
- Refer to children’s observations for ideas of what concepts to explore.
- Ask children about what they like to do and why, where they like to do things, and with whom.
- Ask parents what their child has been doing at home.
- Try moving things around the room. This may elicit new reactions to old objects. Try this outdoors as well.
- Simple experiments are best. Cause and effect, sink and float, gravity, magnets, plant science, water, etc. are all great science topics.
Tips for Introducing Your Science Project
Remember, deciding the topic of the project is the most important step:
- Choose a project that you as the teacher will enjoy also.
- Choose a topic that will have enough experiments or activities for the children during the designated duration of the project.
- Choose a topic in which concepts can be explored at a child’s level.
- Choose a topic in which a hypothesis or question can be developed.
- Develop math, art, and language activities around the same topic.
- Remember to incorporate the sensory table or dramatic play.
- Start brainstorming around this topic.
- What would the question or hypothesis be?
- The next step is to begin researching and listing activities and experiments that support the question or hypothesis.
